The Justice Department released a report saying it will not pursue federal civil rights charges against Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown.

The department found that Wilson’s actions “do not constitute a prosecutable violation” and there “is no evidence upon which prosecutors can rely to disprove Wilson’s stated subjective belief that he feared for his safety.”

I doubt very much that this decision will alter certain opinions held by certain Americans.  The narrative is more important than the facts.

Of some interest, however, is the finding that the Ferguson police department regularly violated the rights of Black residents by stopping drivers without reasonable suspicion, making arrests without probable cause, and using excessive force.

The broader report on police practices also included seven racist e-mails written by Ferguson police and municipal court officials. A November 2008 e-mail, for instance, stated that President Obama could not be president for very long because “what black man holds a steady job for four years.” Another e-mail described Obama as a chimpanzee. An e-mail from 2011 showed a photo of a bare chested group of dancing women apparently in Africa with the caption, “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion.”

It may be that outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder is trying to eat his cake and have it too.  He can’t appease those who wish to exact a pound of Wilson’s flesh, so instead he gives up the most racist police force in America.  Or it may be that the Ferguson Police department has, for years, engaged in a series of abuses upon the citizens they have been sworn to protect and serve. I don’t care whether you have hands up or don’t, but ALL AMERICANS should be concerned when agents of the government are selective in the execution of their charge.  A police department that will abuse the rights of some citizens is a department that will abuse the rights of ALL citizens!
