SAZERAC COCKTAIL

The sazerac cocktail is a often credited with being the very fist cocktail ever created, tracing its roots to pre civil war New Orleans.  Some historians dispute this claim, but none dispute the fact that the Sazerac is a traditional cocktail that is as important to New Orleans as, say, the Margarita is to the southwest.

The cocktail was originally made with Sazerac cognac, but is now made with rye whisky, Peychauds bitters, sugar, and absinthe.

The Sazerac Cocktail

  1. 2 oz Rye Whisky
  2. 3 Dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  3. 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  4. Absinthe
  5. 1 Sugar Cube (or a teaspoon of simple syrup)

Chill Two old fashioned glasses.  In the first glass add the sugar cube and muddle it with the bitters. Add the Rye and a few cubes of ice and stir gently until chilled.

In the second chilled glass, swirl about a teaspoon of absinthe around the glass and discard whatever remains. Strain the rye mixture into the absinthe coated glass, twist a strip of lemon peel over the drink and serve.
