Those of us who loved the original Star Trek television series are mourning the recent loss of Leonard Nimoy, the actor who played the half human half Vulcan, Mr. Spock.
Today, I learned that Nimoy was knows as the conscience of Star Trek. During a time when standing up for your co-stars – your minority co-stars took great courage, Nimoy stood tall.
During the filming of the Star Trek series, Nichelle Nichols, communications officer, Uhura, was not receiving the same pay as her co-stars. Nimoy went to the producers and got Nichols a raise. Later, when Star Trek became an animated series, Nichols and George Takai were not hired to do the voices of their characters, Nimoy refused to work unless Nichols and Takai were hired.
