SINGAPORE SLING

The Singapore Sling is a gin based cocktail developed at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore near the turn of the 20th century.  This iconic drink brings to mind tiki torches and overly sweet drinks with umbrellas used for garnish.  In reality the Singapore Sling is a complex cocktail offering notes that are sweet, tart, fruity, and bitter.  The singapore Sling also possesses enough kick to prevent it from being labled “fru-fru.”

It is said that there are no two Singapore Sling receipes that are the same.  One is likely to receive two different drinks from two different bar tenders.  Below is a recipe that I like.  The recipe is a bit more involved than the short cut recipe of gin, sweet and sour mix and grenadine, (avoid this concoction), but the results are worth it.

Singapore Sling

  1. 2 oz Gin
  2. 3/4 oz Cherry Heering
  3. 2 tsp Benedictine
  4. 2 tsp Cointreau
  5. 2 oz Pineapple juice
  6. 3/4 oz Fresh squeezed lime juice
  7. 2 dashes Grenadine
  8. 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  9. Soda Water
  10. Maraschino Cherry, Orange Slice, Mint Sprig, Pineapple chunk, for garnish

Add first eight ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.  Shake until well-chilled.

Strain into a Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Top with a splash of soda water. Stir. Garnish and serve.
