This is the kind of story that will drive me to drink.  Well, I already drink, so this idiocy and weakness on display in the following story is the kind of thing that will drive me to drink MORE.

The dining hall at Clemson University holds several ethnic themed dining events throughout the year.  Last week, the University held its annual Maximum Mexican event.  The annual event, which features Mexican food has been a student favorite over the years and this year appeared no different. All went fine until two (yes two) students complained that the event was culturally insensitive.

Everything was going great. Students were loving the food and festivities. Except for two students, who took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with the school’s decision to host such a “#CUlturallyInsensitive” event.

It is unclear from the article, which you can read here, exactly what these two students found so offensive (or whether or not they were even Mexican).  However, from other similar idiotic stories protesting “taco Tuesday,” one can deduce that the theme of a Mexican food night is offensive, as is the fact that a couple of the kitchen workers wore sombreros. I am also going to go out on a limb and guess that the students were not Mexican, but a couple white kids whose good-hearted liberalism tells them that they can speak for other people.  (I would just like to point out that in as much as I do believe that white privilege exists, this may be a perfect example of it in action. I find it odd that so often Liberal white people get to decide for other people what is offensive. But I digress.)

As my grandfather used to say, “Somebody’s got to have some sense!” And these moments are ripe for people with sense to stand up and tell the silly people to sit down and shut up.  Here was an opportunity for the University to explain to the “silly and constantly offended” folks that Mexicans do not OWN Mexican food; that in a free and pluralistic society the food that people have brought to this melting pot called America, becomes everyone’s cuisine.  They could have further explained that the idea that only Mexicans can wear sombreros is racist and that respectful donning of costume is a celebration of culture and not a denigration of heritage.

Of course, that didn’t happen.  Instead, the vice president of student affairs, a weak, spine-less, wimpy man named Dr. Doug Hallenbeck,  actually APOLOGIZED!  He apologized for serving Mexican food!

“It is the mission of University Housing & Dining to create supportive and challenging environments that enrich and nourish lives. We failed to live out our mission yesterday, and we sincerely apologize,” Hallenbeck said.

Dr. Hallenbeck went on to promise that the university “will continue to work closely with [its] food service provider to create dining programs that align with Clemson University’s core values.”

What does that gobbledy-gook mean?  What kind of food reflects your core values? Is stir fry next?  Will they stop serving egg-rolls?  In fact, given the new rules of stupidity, can the dining hall serve anything?  Let’s see, how about salad?  So long as there is no Russian or french dressing! This is crazy and Hallenbeck out to be ashamed that he apologized instead of calling out these few whining, privileged, bored, students.

I am telling you folks that until we stand up, the silly people will continue to push the issue more and more into the realm of the absurd.  If we do not act, reason and reality will be turned on its head never to be right-sided.
