This morning Conservatives and other people of good conscience are mourning the passing of associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Antonin Scalia. This, as opposed to dancing in the streets and wishing for the death of another human being like so many of the “good” people. 

Republicans are also wringing their hands, rightly concerned that this president, prior to leaving office, will have another nomination to the high court. (Talk about born under a lucky star!) Conservatives and Republicans are concerned for two reasons: First, we are well aware that Obama will nominate some Left-wing, anti-constitutionalist, horror. Second, we also know that years of falling for the okey doke have delivered a Republican senate so weak, so tepid, so lacking in cahones that they will fail to do their CONSTITUTIONAL duty and block Obama’s nomination. 

As outlined in the Constitution, the process of nominating a Supreme Court justice is a collaborative effort between the President and the Senate. The president nominates a Justice “with the ADVICE AND CONSENT of the senate.”  The current Republican senate will put on a good show for the press and then roll over like a cocker spaniel. Why? 

The answer is the the okey doke has filled the senate with Republicans who don’t really see anything wrong with the choices Obama makes. In fact, they AGREE with them. I don’t need to present any white papers as evidence, all I need do is look and listen to the excuses these men and women will make for not doing their jobs. They either agree with the president or they are too stupid to understand why they should oppose the president. In either case, they prove themselves an embarrassment, an affront, a sell-out to the voters who put them in office because of a promise to look out for their fiscal, and philosophical interests. Alas, it is the same promise Republican candidates have been making for decades-decades of promising one thing and having fifteen excuses as to why they can’t keep their promises; it’s the okey doke and voters fall for each election cycle. Sadly, I’m not very hopeful that the next election will deliver anything different. The okey doke never changes.
